EU: Armenia nuclear plant should be shut down as soon as possible

YEREVAN. – The Armenian Nuclear Power Plant should be shut down as soon as possible.

Dirk Lorenz, Deputy Head of Division for the Eastern Partnership countries at the European External Action Service, told the aforementioned to reporters at the fifth EU-Armenia subcommittee meeting on energy, transport, environment, climate action and civil protection, which has kicked off Tuesday in Armenia’s capital city of Yerevan.

He said they believed that Armenia’s nuclear plant should be decommissioned as soon as possible, since it is impossible to upgrade it in a way that it fully meets the respective international safety requirements.

In Lorenz’s words, however, they realize that energy security is important to Armenia, and this needs to be considered.

He added that it is important to do whatever is possible to increase the safety level of this nuclear power plant.

Lorenz said, under the EU-Armenia agreement, Armenia shall carry out the European Union legislative norms, and stressed that it will take two to five years to do so.
